We just received word via George Thomas at KTSU that pianist Dave Marcellin died last night in Trinidad. No other details have been released yet. Marcellin, born in Trinidad, toured with Al Green (as his Musical Director) and many others before settling in Houston where his career continued to flourish. Known for his energetic island-flair, Marcellin was also devoted a teacher and for many years managed the music-end of the Red Cat Cafe. He had been living/working in Trinidad for the last several years serving as an Artist in Residence at the University of Trinidad and Tabago. Dave was a warm, bright soul of incalculable talent and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. May he Rest In Peace. FROM TRINIDAD EXPRESS: THE local jazz fraternity went into mourning yesterday with the news of the sudden passing of talented jazz pianist Dave Marcellin. Marcellin, who celebrated his 56th birthday on April 12, was the son of veteran brass band leader Mano Marcellin. Speaking to the Express yesterday, his brother Kurt said that Dave suffered cardiac arrest while seeking medical attention for a cold at Medial Associates, St Joseph. He developed breathing problems and was receiving oxygen when he went into cardiac arrest. Kurt said Dave had also been battling a hyper thyroid condition for the past five years. Marcellin left Trinidad in 1972 for the US where he enjoyed a successful career as a jazz pianist. He returned home two years ago and was employed at UTT where he not only set up the jazz programme but was also artist in residence. He was due to perform this Sunday (May 1) at the Jazz On The Beach at Mt Irvine Bay Hotel along with several other jazz artistes. "He was looking forward to playing in Tobago and had already sent over his keyboards," Kurt said. Marcellin leaves to mourn his wife Cheryl and daughters Francella, Donya and Daveta. Also his father and mother Mano and Joyce, brothers Kurt and Burt also musicians and sister Debbie. The funeral service takes place Tuesday, May 3, at the St Joseph R.C. Church at 11 a.m. and thence to the St Joseph cemetery. FROM TRINIDAD & TOBEGA's NEWSDAY: TRINIDADIAN born jazz musician Dave Marcellin passed away on Thursday night following complications arising from a thyroid condition. Marcellin, 56, who led the popular Dave Marcellin Jazzet, was expected to perform at Jazz on the Beach tomorrow which is part of the ongoing Tobago Jazz Experience. Producer, Carl “Beaver” Henderson, who is part organiser of Jazz on the Beach said, the weekend’s events will now be dedicated to Marcellin. Dave’s father, noted musician Mano Marcellin, said his son was not feeling well over the last weekend. He was given a prescription for medication at Medical Associates in St Joseph on Sunday evening but did not obtain it until Wednesday. “You have to remember it was the Easter weekend so hardly anywhere was open to get the medication. Plus he was a stubborn guy and hoped he felt better without it,” Mano told Newsday during a telephone interview yesterday. He said after taking the medication, his son felt worse so he drove him to Medical Associates to be treated. “Doctors did all they could but his thyroid condition caused him to have an irregular heartbeat. The doctors called me at 11.15 pm yesterday to say he did not make it,” Mano said. The funeral service for the jazz musician is expected to be held 11 am next Tuesday at the St Joseph RC Church. It will be a musical send-off for Marcellin, Mano said since well-known musicians have already asked to perform.
